Summary
Provide oral health care, both treatment and education, to all
eligible patients within the prescribed range of duties for a therapist.
Accurately comprehend and adhere to written prescription of each patient and to
work autonomously in assessing the individual’s patient’s needs treat effectively.
Analyze, assess and chose specific treatments where the prescription allows for
a choice.

Responsibilities
Provide dental therapist service according to the patient’s needs ensuring the highest standards of clinical care is provided.
Work with other colleagues to establish a flexible team approach in delivery of a high quality service and contribute to the continued development of the team.
Supervise dental assistants when necessary.
Plan and select the equipment and material for each treatment session according to the treatment plan and patient.
Monitor the dental health of all patients, assess developments in the patient’s dental health and record findings accordingly.
Maintain full accurate clinical notes of all treatments, ensuring that patient activity data is recorded in a timely fashion using approved formats.
Provide preventative oral health education, instruction and guidance to patients including diet advice, diet analysis, fluoride supplements, oral hygiene and smoking cessation advice, suited to the individual and taking into account communication barriers.
Provide restorations in primary teeth including pulp therapy & stainless steel crowns as appropriate.
Provision of preventative treatments including fissure sealants and sealant restorations.
Provision of a full range of periodontal treatments, including scaling, polishing and debridement.
Extraction of deciduous teeth.
Provision of a full range of restorative techniques for permanent teeth subject to the scope of practice of a dental therapist.
Administration of appropriate local analgesia.
Take dental impressions and dental radiographs.
Qualifications/ Education
Registration with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry as Advanced Dental Therapist
Proven maintenance of post-graduate continuing professional development
Experience working in a dental clinic preferred
Experience working with patients in either the role of dental assistant or dental hygienist preferred
Certifications/License
Advanced Dental Therapist license
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Responsibilities:
Provide oral health instruction and disease prevention education. This should include nutritional counseling and dietary analysis.
Take diagnostic radiographic images
Mechanical polishing of restorations
Application of topical, preventive, and prophylactic agents. Including, but not limited to, fluoride varnishes and pit and fissure sealants
Pulp vitality testing of teeth requiring further diagnosis
The application of desensitizing medication or resin
Fabrication of athletic mouth-guards
Placement of temporary restorations
Fabrication of soft occlusal guards
Tissue conditioning and soft reline as required by a patient.
Atraumatic restorative therapy
Dressing changes following dental therapy
Tooth re-implantation following luxation
Administration of local anesthetic and nitrous oxide
Dental Therapist Indirect Supervision:
Emergency palliative treatment of dental pain
Placement and removal of space maintainers
Preparation of cavities, caries and recurrent caries removal in both permanent and primary teeth
Restoration of both primary and permanent teeth
Cementation and placement of provisional crowns
Preparation, placement and cementation of preformed crowns
Pulpotomies on primary teeth
Indirect and direct pulp capping on both primary and permanent teeth
Stabilization and splinting of teeth which have been re-implanted
Extractions of primary teeth
Suture removal
Brush Biopsies
Repair of defective prosthetic devices
Re-cementation of permanent crowns
Advanced Dental Therapist:
All of the above duties listed under general supervision.
Nonsurgical extractions of periodontally diseased permanent teeth with tooth mobility of +3 to +4
Oral Evaluation and assessment of dental disease and the formulation of an individualized treatment plan; as authorized by the collaborating dentist.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and desire to work within a dental public health model of service delivery.
Knowledge and ability to understand and follow through on dental treatment plans. Ability to collaborate with dentist to find appropriate treatment plan for a patient.
Good communication skills, including the ability to constructively educate patients on oral health and motivate follow through of needed treatment.
Ability to work within Minnesota Statues and the Minnesota Dental Practice Act.
