Walgreens Announces “Significant” Store Closures

CEO report: Walgreens announced yesterday that the company is repositioning its store footprint, noting that about 25% of its stores are not contributing to the chain's long-term strategy.

The company is working on a program to close many of these locations over the next three years. Walgreens currently operates 8,700 stores nationwide.

Of particular note is the impact on pharmacy access for Health Center patients. For example, HRSA’s Office of Pharmacy Affairs 340B database lists at least 14 Walgreens pharmacies for Health Centers located in the 55404 (South Minneapolis) zip code.
