The Minneapolis Health Department (MHD) is offering a series of trainings for healthcare staff to help patients find affordable healthy foods and improve their health through good nutrition.
Who can participate?
Clinic staff working directly with low-income patients:
Community Health Workers
Nurses, physicians, and medical assistants
Patient care coordinators
Social service staff
Cost

Why Participate?
By participating in the trainings, your organization will:
Be recognized by MHD as a Certified Food Resource Navigator.
Platinum Level: attend 7-8 training sessions.
Gold Level: attend 5-6 training sessions.
Silver Level: attend 4 training sessions.

Cheat sheet for food navigators to help guiding conversation with patients.

August 1st
This training covered food assistance programs such as SNAP and WIC and fruit and vegetable voucher programs. The session wrapped up with a tour of the Four Sisters Farmers Market.
Session #1 - Core
September 12th
Minneapolis Health Department staff and a guest speaker presented about how to assist with SNAP and CSFP/NAPS applications, as well as detailed information about where and how to utilize Market Bucks and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Participants will leave this training with a deeper understanding of these programs, the application process, and skills to assist patients in accessing these benefits.

November 14th
Session #4 - Removing Barriers to Participating in Food Assistance and Voucher Programs
Join Minneapolis Health Department staff to learn more about local food access programs including food shelves, Produce Rx, the Twin Cities Mobile Market, Fare for All, and home produce delivery options. Participants will leave this training with an understanding of these local programs and points of contact from various organizations.

Session #5 - Food Shelves, Food Resources, and 2025 Voucher Program Updates
Join Minneapolis Health Department staff to learn about any annual changes to food access programs including income guidelines and practice motivational interviewing skills. Participants will leave this training with updated information on programs and sharper interviewing skills.

Session #3 - WIC and Farmers Market Nutrition Program Deep Dive, Navigating Food Resources During the Winter
Join Minneapolis Health Department and Hennepin County WIC staff to learn more about WIC and the Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Participants will leave this training with a deeper understanding of these programs and information on assisting with food access during winter months.
Session #6 - Institutionalizing Food Resource Navigator Program In Your Clinic and FRN Graduation
Join Minneapolis Health Department staff to learn about codifying a Food Resource Navigator program at your clinic, receive a quick refresher on food access programs, and celebrate the completion of the Food Resource Navigator training series.
